The only thing Golden on this hotel is the view
This was our second trip through Laos, and overall, we’ve been positively surprised by the friendliness and hospitality of the people in hotels. Often, you pay very little for a room (around $15-20 per night) and know to expect the basics—a bed, a warm shower, and air conditioning. That’s perfectly fine. However, when you pay three times that amount, you expect a much higher standard. Unfortunately, Golden Hotel Don Det didn’t live up to that expectation.
After negotiating, we settled on $45 per night. From there, the disappointments began:
• The swimming pool was poorly maintained, with countless loose tiles and sharp edges in the water.
• Sunbeds were rock-hard, and there were no towels to be found anywhere.
• Wooden floors around the pool were splintered, and there were ant nests just steps away from the water.
The room initially looked promising, but upon closer inspection, we noticed a dead plant in the bathroom and leftover trash from previous guests. The shower was warm, but the holder was broken, making it inconvenient to use.
I needed to work in the room, but although there was a Wi-Fi password, there was no actual Wi-Fi. After two hours of complaints, they fixed it—but the connection was so poor I eventually gave up on working.
Breakfast was another disappointment. The dining area was essentially a construction site. The buffet looked nice at first glance, but the staff seemed more focused on their phones than on helping guests.
• The coffee was decent, but Lipton tea was the only option.
• I picked up a pre-packaged butter only to find it had already been used.
• Strong winds caused a nearby parasol to flip over, almost taking our entire breakfast with it.
For $15 a night, this hotel might have been acceptable, but even then, we wouldn’t return. If you’re visiting Don Det, do NOT stay at Golden Hotel Don Det. The only thing “golden” about this place is the view. What a disaster!
