A Beautiful Escape with Much room for Improvement
Check-In Experience
Check-in was smooth and efficient. Since we had made our reservations online while still in the U.S., everything was confirmed via email, and all we had to do upon arrival was present our details. The young lady at the reception was lovely—cheerful, professional, and thorough. She explained all the inclusions of our stay, provided our breakfast stubs, and even scheduled our spa and activities. A truly impressive front desk experience!
The Resort & Amenities
The resort itself is undeniably beautiful—an exquisite Balinese-inspired retreat surrounded by lush forests. It’s the perfect spot for rest and relaxation, with stunning architecture and well-manicured landscapes. Accommodations range from standard rooms to high-end suites, so budgeting accordingly is essential, as even the junior suites can be pricey (plus the added cost of food and beverages, though breakfast is included).
One of Highland Bali’s best features is its breathtaking view of Pantabangan Lake, providing a serene and picturesque backdrop. The reception area is beautifully adorned with Balinese décor, while cobblestone pathways lead guests through the resort. A bellhop escorted us to our suite via golf cart, enhancing the warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The resort offers two swimming pools—one conveniently close to our suite and an infinity pool near Soraya Restaurant (the only on-site dining option, which I’ve reviewed separately). Other amenities include a gym and a spacious banquet hall for special events.
The Suite
We stayed in a Super Executive Suite, which provided a spacious and comfortable living space for our three-day, two-night stay. High ceilings, a cozy living area, a work desk, a well-stocked mini-bar, and a king-sized bed made for a luxurious experience. The bathroom featured a modern tub, and the private balcony overlooking the lake and forest was the perfect spot for morning coffee while soaking in nature’s beauty.
The Downsides
Unfortunately, our experience wasn’t without its frustrations:
Housekeeping Mishap
On our second day, we requested room cleaning while we were out ATV riding and kayaking. However, upon returning, we found that our request had been completely ignored. We had specifically mentioned this at check-in, so it was disappointing to come back to an untouched room.
Privacy Concerns & Employee Conduct
To make matters worse, a group of resort employees (identifiable by their uniforms) were gathered right outside our suite, visibly excited and taking photos. It turns out a well-known senator and his family were staying next door, and the staff appeared more interested in their celebrity sighting than maintaining professionalism. While we understand their enthusiasm, their behavior disrupted the peace and privacy we had paid for. A luxury resort should ensure that staff maintain discretion and respect guest boundaries.
Service Shortcomings & Maintenance Issues
On our last day, our air conditioning unit malfunctioned, leaking water onto the floor and even the flat-screen TV. We reported it, and while maintenance arrived promptly, the situation dragged on, consuming much of our final morning. We were unable to shower or finish packing comfortably.
When we requested a late checkout to compensate for the inconvenience, the front desk agent was hesitant and initially only granted a 30-minute extension—completely inadequate given the circumstances. After some pushback, we were begrudgingly given an extra hour. Compared to the seamless service at true high-end resorts like the Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons, where late checkouts are granted without issue in such situations, this felt like poor customer service.
Final Thoughts
Highland Bali has immense potential—it boasts a fantastic location, stunning design, and a tranquil atmosphere. However, for a resort marketing itself as "high-end," there are critical areas that need improvement:

With some much-needed refinements in service, operations, and food quality, Highland Bali could truly live up to its luxury branding. But as it stands, it risks being just another pretty resort with subpar service hiding behind a stunning facade.
Chances of returning is TBD but definitely something I'd skip recommending friends who are used to TRUE Luxury Experience.
